From the City of Bellaire:
We are pleased to announce that Harris County Commissioners Court approved on September 18th the allocation of $15 million within the 2018 Harris County Flood Bond Program for the Cypress Ditch Regional Flood Mitigation Project. City of Bellaire Mayor Gus Pappas, Mayor Pro Tem Win Frazier, Council Member Ross Gordon, City Manager Sharon Citino, and Assistant City Manager Beth Jones attended the Harris County Commissioners Court meeting to express support for a partnership-driven approach to flood risk reduction and to thank Commissioners Court for their support of the Cypress Ditch Regional Flood Mitigation Project.
“We are now well on our way toward our goal of mitigating the hazards of flooding in our town and the surrounding area,” said Bellaire Mayor Gus Pappas. “With the county’s support of $15 million, we will be able to begin a $110 million regional flood mitigation project, and we’re proud to lead a unified strategy that addresses flooding at a regional scale.”
Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones stated, “With the inevitability of future storms, Harris County Precinct 4 remains steadfast in our commitment to improving flood protection and enhancing resiliency. The Cypress Ditch project will relieve flooding for thousands of residents in Bellaire, Gulfton, and all along the Interstate 610 corridor. Thanks to the City of Bellaire—in partnership with Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher, State Senator Molly Cook, State Representative Ann Johnson, and Harris County Flood Control District—we will continue delivering progress and protection for our families.”
Next steps include developing an interlocal agreement with the Harris County Flood Control District to move the project forward.
