During Texas Music Festival’s re(Discovery) Week, Houstonians will have the opportunity to attend the (re)Discovering William Dawson appreciation panel, which will feature Joseph Horowitz, musicologist and author; Anne Lundy, director, Scott Joplin Orchestra and Community Music Academy; Lucius R. Wyatt, retired professor, Prairie View A&M University, and personal friend of the composer. This panel will be moderated by Moores Professor of Musicology, Howard Pollack. Following the panel will be Settling the Score: William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony, an in-depth look into William Dawson’s piece. After the conclusion of the panels, Houstonians will have the opportunity to listen to William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony (1934), which has not been performed in Houston for over 30 years! It will be conducted by renowned artistic partner, Mei-Ann Chen.
